TWO brothers from Pool School have presented Falklands hero Simon Weston with an exact wooden replica of the RNAS Culdrose helicopter which plucked him to safety from his burning ship during the Falklands War.
Mr Weston was presented with the Sea King by Andrew and Christopher Hyde when he came to hear about the work of the CPR Success Zone from local students this week. The two boys made the helicopter themselves.
Mr Weston addressed a group of 14-year-old students from Camborne, Pool and Redruth secondary schools at the Regal Cinema, Redruth, on Tuesday.
He was part of the Falklands Task Force in 1982.
The ship on which he was serving, the Sir Galahad, was bombed by Argentine planes and Mr Weston was left with horrific burns as a result of the fire that followed.
In spite of these serious injuries and the mental suffering, he has become a great example of personal triumph and courage and against the odds has made a great success of his life.
Mr Weston is in the area for a couple of days and as part of his schedule will be given a whirlwind tour by three peer tutors (students who take on various roles of responsibility within their school and community) who are keen to promote this area as one with both a proud history and dynamic future.
Tim Williams, chief executive of the CPR Urban Regeneration Company, who has been working with the young people, said: "Today's children are the workforce and community leaders of tomorrow.
"It is more important than ever in this area to make sure that they are inspired to believe in themselves and this area. CPR is increasingly the main area of growth in Cornwall."
