Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson is insistent that he will not break the pay structure at Huish Park in order to attract big name players to the club (written by Steve Sowden).
While fans have been talking about Yeovil strengthening the squad with the possible acquisitions of the likes of Lee Trundle from Swansea City or David Graham at Torquay United, Johnson is adamant that he cannot and will not do it.
"I would love to bring the likes of Graham and Trundle to Yeovil," he said. "In fact if I could bring Alan Shearer to Yeovil then I would.
"But those sorts of players would demand huge wages and it would unsettle the rest of the players here. When it came to renegotiating contracts they would want the same sort of money.
"The wage demands of these players being talked about are so high that they are out of reach for us."
And Johnson added: "Perhaps fans should be reminded that we've got some players here at Yeovil whose wages are too high for other clubs in the Second and Third Divisions."
Johnson has maintained that he is continuing to make enquiries on several players -- the latest being Rochdale striker Paul Connor.
The Yeovil boss intimated that he wanted the enquiry to have been kept quiet and sounded disappointed that Rochdale manager Steve Parkin had 'let the cat out of the bag.'
But Johnson said: "I'm always looking for new players. Just because we don't sign anyone doesn't mean to say I'm not looking."
A striker is still a key objective and they have been looking at a 29-year-old Brazilian by the name of Olivio who has recently been playing in the French Second Division.
Yeovil striker Kevin Gall, who is low on goals and one would suggest low on confidence at the moment, is coming in for mounting pressure from the fans to produce the goods.
But Gall was inches away from scoring a couple during the 2-0 defeat at Carlisle United on January 17 and then hit the post in the dying seconds of last Saturday's game with Leyton Orient which the Glovers lost 2-1. You could say that one goal for Gall would put him on his way again.
Johnson, who is looking for more goals from all of his players rather than just Gall, said: "We nearly did enough to get a draw out of the game with Orient, but it wasn't to be and Kev can't score for love nor money at the moment can he?
"Too many are hitting the foot of the post or just outside the post at the moment. But we know what we've got to do -- we've got to turn it around quickly.
"The boys want to do it and they are upset as we all are, but I've got faith in them to turn it around. But if I have to look outside the football club then I will do so."
