Torquay United chairman Mike Bateson has announced that the club will be ceasing its Centre of Excellence operations next season - and will be scrapping its Youth Training Scheme as well.
The government have been behind moves to scrap the YTS and they will be introducing modern apprenticeships at the start of next season in all sport, not just football.
The Football League is currently talking with the government agencies involved over what they believe to be much-needed changes to the proposed legislation concerning football and modern apprenticeships.
The club will honour their second year YTS players' contracts, but it is likely that from next season they will look to bring in older apprentices - sighting Lee Canoville and Jo Kuffour, who were both trainees with Arsenal and who both joined the club on free transfers, as models.
Further announcements by Bateson are expected soon.
