GRAHAM Story is the new chairman of Somerset Cancer Care, which gives information and support to cancer patients, carers and relatives.
"I'd like to raise awareness in the community of the help our highly trained and supportive volunteers provide, and highlight how the community can help us help others," said Mr Story.
Somerset Cancer Care holds weekly support group meetings in Taunton, Minehead and Wells, offering an opportunity to talk, receive emotional support and free relaxing complementary therapies, and meet others in similar circumstances.
Charity co-ordinator Fiona Campbell said: "Our volunteers are carefully selected and anything disclosed by users of our services remains strictly confidential. There's no charge and no need for a referral from a GP or hospital."
Volunteers also support cancer patients at Taunton's Musgrove Park Hospital. The charity runs Musgrove's 'Look Good, Feel Good' service for chemotherapy patients on Wednesdays, noon to 2.30pm.
Aromatherapy and makeovers are available on the first Wednesday of the month, 2-4pm.
Help is needed for collections at Sainsbury's Hankridge store, Taunton, April 9-10, and in Watchet, Williton and Minehead on April 15.
The first fundraiser this year is a Valentine's supper dance at Cheddon Fitzpaine Village Hall on February 14, with music from Bertie's Big Band. For tickets, call Fiona Campbell on 01823-432450.
