A MISTAKE on a new cast iron road sign on the Quantock Hills has been corrected thanks to eagle-eyed Somerset County Gazette readers.
As we reported two weeks ago, rangers on the hills are installing new versions of the area's characteristic white road signs, but one arm of the new sign at The Pines, which was used in a promotional photo, says the village of Cothelstone is five miles away, which has confused motorists ever since.
The County Gazette has received several enquiries from readers questioning the accuracy of the sign.
Senior ranger Tim Russell said: "When we scribbled down the numbers the two got mistaken for a five at the foundry.
"Engineers have been out to grind down the number and replace it with the correct one.
"We'd like to thank observant members of the public and eagle-eyed Gazette readers."
The Local Heritage Initiative Project's bid to restore road signs in the Quantocks Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has proved popular with the public.
Mr Russell said: "People have said they like what we're doing and other counties also see it as a really good example.
"We'd love to hear from anyone who may know an old crossroad name that would be helpful to the project."
