A £130 million pound plan to modernise Torbay Hospital was given the go-ahead in principle by planners.
The plans, which include a pioneering park and ride scheme, went before Torbay Council's development control committee this week.
Members granted outline permission for the 70,000 square metre extension and new parking system despite objections from some residents.
Healthcare bosses will now iron out full details of the 24-metere high building and new 610-space car park and ride system.
The plans are part of the hospital's redevelopment and modernisation scheme providing new operating theatres, wards, maternity, critical care, breast care, coronary care, outpatient and accident and emergency.
Other facilities will include new laboratories, a catering and dinning room, plant and boiler rooms and sterilisation services.
