TECHNICAL difficulties threatening to scupper plans for a £200,000 amenity area on a former municipal tip at Culvercliffe in Minehead appear to have been resolved.
Children's play facilities, a picnic spot, ball games venue and areas for walkers and dog walkers were envisaged in plans outlined by West Somerset District Council.
It had hoped to 're-profile' and landscape the area with the help of topsoil deposited by building companies -- in particular local firm C.J. Lynch but the scheme was put on hold because of doubts over the site's designation.
Now, a ground condition survey by the company has found that the site is stable and suitable for a play area.
A meeting of the council's cabinet heard on Wednesday that the topsoil on the site was more than adequate to allow plans to go ahead.
It had earlier been unclear whether Culvercliffe would be designated by the Environment Agency as an engineering or waste disposal site -- the latter would need major financial investment for work to prepare the land.
The soil needed to be screened to ensure it was not inert waste and there was concern over the stability of the land.
Minehead Town clerk Des Dobson said: "This is very good news, as we are short of play areas in Minehead.
"Culvercliffe is out on a limb and under-utilised, and it will be great for children and parents if it can be brought back into use."
