A HEALTHY entry of riders had to endure some pretty bleak weather conditions for the Camborne and Redruth Motor Club's prestigious Tristan da Cunha motor cycle trial on Sunday.
On the plus side, however, was the added attraction of riding at a new venue in a disused granite quarry site on the outskirts of Constantine.
With championship points also at stake, Shane Williams reversed the previous day's Kernow trial results and pushed last year's champion Jason Lawer into the runner-up berth. With lap scores of 13, 7, 4 Williams secured his second win of the three events held so far this season by just edging out Lawer's marks of 15, 7, 8. George Edyvean's third place was never in contention after the first two laps completed, but came back strongly on his last lap and although leaving it a little late to challenge the front runners was good enough to keep Gareth Andrew in fourth place, six marks adrift.
The Non-Experts proved to be a two-horse race after Shaun Bunney's retirement. Chris Dustow kept Phil Atkins' recent return to form at bay by bettering his laps on two out of three.
The clubman route main awards on mono Non-Expert went to Devon visitors John and Paul Anstey, 9 and 13 respectively, Cornwall's John Oliver's challenge faded with a second lap of seven against the Anstey's 1 and 2 so having to settle for third place two days in a row.
The Schoolboy A class riders Dan Oliver and Tristan Barnicoat had to endure a nailbiting day with Oliver turning around Barnicoat's first lap advantage to pinch the premier and top points by two marks, but the B's took the schoolboy route honours with Alex Bland top dog for the third points win in a row, staying in front on all his laps apart from Kyle Jacob's second lap of three being truly outstanding in every detail. Unfortunately his first and third lap of 23/26 kept him in a disappointing third place in class.
The Twin-shock Ossa of Richard Parkyn was best in class and best on course. Hot on his heels for course supremacy was C schoolboy Keelan Hancock who was three marks adrift of Parkyn and 12 ahead of class runner-up Sefan Goodman.
With the big pre 65 bikes finding the granite rocks a little high it was left to former national and Cornish champion Colin Dommett to scoop the premier on his nimble two-stroke Cotton with a comfortable win over the big Ariel of Peter Pollard.
Richard Bland's Novice Mono class win and second family double in seven days nearly didn't happen. Out in in front on his first two laps, he slipped to disappointing 15 marks lost on the final circuit and almost handed the premier to Chris Gooodman who in turn just pipped Howard Stevens for runner up with a very tidy 9 lost on his last circuit.
With ten sidecars entered, the competition was very close throughout the day. Gary and Keith Parnell held their nerve and took the main award back across the Tamar along with 2nd place of Steve/Harry Radford, and 3rd, Tim Hawkins/Tim Sparkes.
It could have been so much different for the Hawkins/Sparkes outfit had they not come to such an abrupt stop on the granite of section six.
Apart from the weather a great day's sport was enjoyed by all with a great new venue for future events.
