The Camborne Town Band Solo and Quartet Contest, held at Camborne Science and Community College on Saturday, attracted more than youngsters competing from bands around the area.
Schoolchildren and bands from Camborne, St Dennis, Bugle and Mount Charles, amongst others, joined in the annual competition.
The event was due to be opened by Camborne mayor Cyril Waterhouse who died suddenly last Tuesday. Instead his widow Freda stood in and opened the event.
Alan Pope, leader of Camborne Youth Band, led an emotional minute's silence before introducing Mrs Waterhouse.
The two adjudicators for the competition were Alan Morrison, who has had a long association with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band as principal cornet, and John Hitchens, musical director of Helston Town Band.
