A POLICE inspector, formerly in charge of officers at Chard and Ilminster, has issued a strong warning to drug users: "cannabis is still a crime."
Insp John Holt, who now works in Avon and Somerset Constabulary's drugs strategy unit, fears people are confused about what the reclassification of cannabis under the Misuse of Drugs Act, which takes place on January 29, actually means.
Cannabis is being reclassified to a class C drug, however possession is still an arrestable offence that can result in a two year prison sentence.
"It is only in limited situations that officers can issue a street warning instead of arresting somebody for possessing cannabis," said Insp Holt.
