Town councillors have raised concerns over the size of a residential development planned for an "eyesore" site at the entrance to Porthleven.

Planning permission is being sought for 14 flats and one additional dwelling on the former Cowls Garage site at Methleigh Bottoms.

The application has received a mixed reception in the port, with several nearby residents backing the scheme but others questioning the appearance of the proposed "crescent" of flats.

Discussing the plans at a meeting last week, members of the town council agreed the site needed tidying up but had some concerns about the scale of the proposed development.

Chairman Jill Green feared the "sheer size" of the buildings would be overwhelming but said an artist's impression of the development in the context of the surrounding buildings would help decide the issue.

Council member Jo Wright reported residents' concerns that the development was out of keeping with Porthleven and instead looked like "something from Chelsea" - opinions which contrasted with the views of councillor Michael Crowle, who felt the "tasteful" architecture would fit in well with the surroundings. Colleague Mark Berryman said the details of the proposal were important because the site was in such a prominent position.

He said: "This is a very important site because it is a gateway to the village. It is the first thing you see on the way in and it must be got right."

Members agreed to express concern at the height and scale of the flats but were fully supportive of plans to convert the existing garage building into a separate dwelling.
