POLICE in the Taunton area have warned criminals there is nowhere to hide after a successful Christmas crime crackdown.

Operation Blitz and Glitz resulted in 150 arrests and the New Year promises no let-up for those who flout the law. Police targeted villains seeking to exploit the Christmas season and the operation was also aimed at increasing public safety.

Arrests were made for offences including theft, robbery, possession of drugs, burglary, assault and public order.

Extra patrols by uniformed officers, plain-clothes officers, Community Support Officers and members of the Special Constabulary meant the police maintained a high-visibility presence day and night.

The town centre team's head, Sgt Nick Frewin, said: "Glitz and Blitz made Taunton a considerably safer place over the festive period.

"There were arrests right across the board thanks to high-profile, intelligence-led policing.

Sgt Frewin said that the New Year would see officers continuing to track down the town's crooks. He said: "While Glitz and Blitz was a success we want to continue in the same vein into 2004.'
