Torquay managed three goals after an eight hour barren spell when they beat big-spenders Northampton at Plainmoor on Saturday.
Jo Kuffour broke the non-scoring run with a 12th minute strike following a parried Alex Russell shot.
Further goals from Lee Canoville, a sweet left-footed 25-yarder, and captain Craig Taylor, a close-range volley, were punctuated by an Ian Sampson reply when the score was at 2-0. The result keeps the Gulls in ninth.
Plymouth's seven-match winning streak came to a 0-0 end at Grimsby on Saturday when the home team raised their game to foil Argyle at every turn.
In fact, the Pilgrims were lucky to come away from the fishing town with a point, Grimsby were beaten heavily by bottom-of-the-division side Wycombe Wanderers the week before, and they looked on paper to be a weak side. But they put in a hard-working performance, and reaped their reward.
Exeter made it through to the fourth round of the FA Trophy on Saturday with a good 3-2 win over Hereford United. It was the third time they had played their fellow Football League mates in three weeks and they completed the full array of results.
In the League over Christmas United beat City 1-0, and then they played out a draw, before the Grecians weekend win.
But all the goals came in the last 15 minutes, with going 2-0 up with goals from Sean Devine on 75 minutes and James Coppinger on 78.
But Hereford managed to get two back on 82 minutes and 85, before Gareth Sheldon became the hero following his 88th minute winner. The Grecians will now travel to Norfolk to meet King's Lynn.
