The chairman of the driving force behind the future regeneration of Torbay has been selected, at the first meeting of the Torbay Development Agency board.
Les Burnett, Managing Partner of Francis Clark Accountants, will preside over the new public / private partnership that will encourage the development of business, tourism, marine services and the regeneration of the Bay.
The board consists of 14 members representing business and tourism sectors, along with two key advisors from the Regional Development Agency and Government Office South West.
At the board's first informal meeting, members were given an insight into some of the major exciting schemes and issues they will face during their future meetings.
These included a presentation on the achievements so far at Torquay waterfront and the Beacon development, and the success of this initial regeneration project which includes the new cill and bridge, the Living Coasts attraction, restaurant and caf facilities and other marine-based business.
They were also introduced to the vision and plans for phase two of the development which is for the Public Realm project around the harbour, to upgrade the area.
A similar presentation was given on plans for Brixham regeneration and how the joint working with Brixham 21 and other agencies is leading to major potential developments for the harbour area and town centre.
The current and future opportunities for industrial and business development sites, including White Rock and Yannons Farm, were also highlighted.
In his welcome speech to the board, Torbay Council Leader Chris Harris said: 'The council has welcomed the formation of the Torbay Development Agency with great enthusiasm. For the first time in the history of Torbay we will have a single board of people representing the private and public sectors, together with the Regional Development Agency and Government Office South West, who will work together to maximise the regeneration opportunities for all the people who live and work in the Bay. All of us in this room tonight must not fail to grasp this opportunity, and I look forward very much to forming a dynamic and rewarding relationship with you all.'
