FORMER player Mike Hawes returned to Wellington as the new manager of Chard on Tuesday - but his night was spoilt by two young strikers.
Alexis Piper and Leon Taswell, both new to Wellington's side this season, combined to sink Chard in this Screwfix League match.
Their pace proved too much for Chard's defence and both scored as Wellington recorded their first home win in the league this season.
Wellington, in fact, could have won by a bigger margin but missed a couple of good chances in the second half as Chard went in search of saving the game.
Chard, whose side included new signings Paul Thorpe and Tony Pounder, were also denied goals by some fine goalkeeping from Sam Carreau - in both halves.
Wellington's opener came in the 30th minute with Taswell and Piper combining to open up Chard's defence.
Taswell, making his first start in the league, got in behind the defence and crossed for Piper to scramble home at the second attempt.
The pair were both guilty of missing golden chances before delaying the inevitable - a second goal in the 83rd minute.
Taswell found himself with plenty of time and space and he kept a cool head to chip goalkeeper Tom Manley.
Wellington are away to Bitton in a league game tomorrow, while Minehead are home to bottom side Shepton Mallet.
Former Wellington goalkeeper Stuart Parris has been appointed assistant player-manager of Chard Town.
