BT has got its wires crossed over the date for Wiveliscombe to get broadband internet connections.

It was thought the town could be online by the end of April but red-faced phone company bosses admitted a "misunderstanding" had got Wiveliscombe confused with Winscombe.

BT press officer Jason Mann confirmed the town has reached the trigger level needed for the telephone exchange to be upgraded to allow high-speed world wide web access.

He said a date for the work will be announced in the next two to three weeks but stressed a great deal of work has to be done.

"It typically costs around £200,000 to enable an exchange," said Mr Mann. "At the present time it is impossible to say when the work will be completed."

"We will progress it as quickly as we can but it's going to be months."

Adrian Flook MP has been among the highest profile campaigners for broadband in the area and pledged to push phone company bosses to deliver on their promise as soon as possible.

He will visit Wiveliscombe on Monday to join celebrations that the town has reached its trigger level, together with neighbouring Milverton.
