Mullion 1 St Agnes 3

JOLLY'S Combination League champions St Agnes, not the force they were for the past couple of seasons, still proved too good for Mullion at Clifden Parc where they ran out 3-1 winners.

The home side paid for a slow start because after 15 minutes they were already trailing by a couple of goals. To their credit they did manage to make a fight of it, but conceding a third right on half-time always left them with a mountain to climb.

The opening goal came following a short corner by Martin Dunstan. He slipped the ball to James Thomas who whipped in a cross for Liam Heenan to head in unchallenged.

St Agnes doubled their lead two minutes later when a Chris Mulroy through ball was collected by Heenan who ran on and saw the opportunity almost wasted as goalkeeper Stuart Williams halted him in his tracks, but he was unable to prevent Heenan from regaining possession to score.

Graham Cook had a couple of one-on-ones with the 'keeper, but was unable to make the most of his chances and right on the half-time whistle St Agnes virtually ensured all three points when they scored a third goal. Heenan, raiding on the left, cut in and pulled the ball back into the path of Mulroy who crossed for Tom Benney to score.

The second half saw Mullion dominate possession for long periods, but they were unable to turn their superiority into goals.

The home side looked to have scored a good goal when Will Dukes had a header that appeared to be over the line, but the referee was not impressed and waved on play.

Cook and Adam May both looked threatening and had half chances to score, but a combination of poor finishing and sound goalkeeping by James Hosking restricted Mullion to just one goal scored by Adam May after good work by Graham Cook.

On Saturday Mullion play fellow strugglers Newquay, kick-off 2.30 pm.
