PERRANWELL 4 WENDRON 0
THIS looks quite a drubbing for Wendron in the Jolly's Combination League, but it was far from that as the visitors matched Perran in all areas except where it mattered most - in front of goal.
That was where Perran had the edge and where the difference in the two sides lay - striker Mark Rapsey.
Not the force he was in his heyday when he was one of the most leaner and feared strikers in the Duchy, Rapsey was still sharp enough to give everyone a reminder of what he is capable of by notching all four of his side's goals, goals which in some cases were absolute class.
There was no indication of what was to come after 20 minutes with the game finely balanced, but when Wendron failed to clear the ball it fell to Rapsey who made no mistake from close range.
Five minutes later saw a brilliant piece of individual play by Rapsey when, in a crowded area, he executed a superb lob over goalkeeper Brian Scoffin to notch a second goal.
Wendron continued to enjoy a fair share of the play, but they lacked a threat in front of goal with Perran's Simon Fisher mopping up most of what the visitors had to offer.
Wendron tried hard to get back into the game in the second half, but they failed to make any real inroads despite their neat approach work.
A long diagonal ball out of defence caused problems for Wendron when Steve Opie slipped as he went to head clear. Rapsey, never slow to spot a chance, gained possession and with his back to goal, turned and fired an unstoppable shot past Scoffin from just outside the area to extend Wendron's lead.
Perran maintained their grip on the game in the closing stages and ten minutes from time Rapsey completed his personal rout of Wendron when he headed a fourth goal from Gareth Harris' pass.
On Saturday Wendron face another stiff task when they entertain league leaders Penryn Athletic at Underlane. Kick-off is 2.30 pm.
