My wife and I were delighted to read in last week's Packet that "BT agrees terrace phone box can stay".
In the 1950s, when I was drafted for National Service, this phone box on Greenbank formed a vital link between my girlfriend (Dorothy Tuffery of 2, Penwerris Terrace) and myself.
When I was undergoing technical training in the REME, at Arborfield, Reading, we would agree a time when I'd ring the box (no mobile phones in them thar days!). Dorothy would stand there a bit like Lilly Marlene until I rang at the appointed hour.
Our golden wedding anniversary will be in 2005 so the phone link must have proved successful!
