Despite the rain, there was no shortage of people turning out to see in the new year in Truro. Most people had been in clubs and pubs for much of the evening but, at ten minutes to midnight, the Piazza on Lemon Quay became a hive of activity when they flooded onto the streets.
The city also staged a fireworks display to welcome in 2004 as did households all over the area. The rain did, however, put a damper on some of the festivities.
Truro police reported no major incidents in the city and said that most new year revellers had behaved themselves and enjoyed the night to the full.
PC Richard McSweeney said there was "nothing of major consequence" and "no real incidents" with drunks.
At the cathedral, the new year was greeted in the traditional way with bellringers in action on the stroke of midnight.
For the thousands of people who had enjoyed two weeks off work, getting back to normal on Monday was a bit of a shock.
