BURNHAM could be the first place in the world to benefit from a new project that would see up to 20 giant wind towers built off the town's shoreline.
The towers would capitalise on Bridgwater Bay's high tides to harness wind, wave and tidal energy as well as providing a coastal defence for the town.
Under the proposals crosses would be anchored into the seabed with an underwater generator attached and a wind tower rising out of each from the water.
As well as providing electricity for the area, the towers would act as a sea defence by serving as a buffer against waves crashing against the fragile Sedgemoor shoreline.
