POLICE pulled in more Christmas and New Year drink drivers in the Taunton area than anywhere else in Avon and Somerset.
Somerset West statistics for the festive period show that in Taunton Minehead, Bridgwater and Burnham 45 drivers gave positive breath tests, one refused to give a sample and two were arrested for being drunk in charge of a vehicle.
Police spokesman Dan Mountain said: "The Somerset West figures are the highest in the force, but that's down to more rigorous policing."
The Taunton area 'Glitz and Blitz' drink drive clampdown was run in addition to the forcewide Operation Tonic. Supt Lawrie Lewis, head of the force road-policing unit, said 10,000 motorists were stopped under Operation Tonic over the holidays and drink drive arrests were down on last year.
There were no alcohol-related serious or fatal road accidents in December.
The public played their part in blow-ing the whistle on drink drivers by calling Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.
