The Pilgrims cruised to a 7-0 win over Roy McFarland's struggling Chesterfield at Home Park on Saturday, scoring their first five goals in 18 minutes, with midfielder David Friio putting away a hat-trick.
Lee Hodges opened Argyle's account on 4 minutes and Tony Capaldi made it two on 11 minutes. A minute later Nathan Lowndes made it three, before Friio put away his first on 15 minutes, and Lowndes doubled his tally on 18.
Friio then made it 6-0 on 36 minutes, before completing his tally two minutes from time with Plymouth only scoring once in the second half.
The win keeps them at the top of the table, with QPR still sitting four points behind them in second place.
The Gulls lost 1-0 to Rochdale on Saturday - and it is now eight hours since a Torquay player scored a goal.
Leroy Rosenior was again annoyed with some of the referreeing decisions, and rued the Gulls' bad luck.
Dale's goal came from a 36th minute penalty, Fit-again left back David Woozley was adjudged to have manhandled a Rochdale man in the box as a corner was crossed in, and Kevin Townson lashed the spot kick past Arjan van Heusden.
United now face Northampton at Plainmoor next Saturday.
Exeter came from behind to beat Farnborough 2-1 at the weekend, and captain fantastic Glenn Cronin was the man on hand to put away the winner in the 76th minute.
It was Farnborough's ex-League stiker - Peterborough and Birmingham - Howard Forington, that open the game's account, putting his side into a 29 minute lead.
But City were able to equalise through Sean Devine - his first goal in five games - shortly after half time.
Exeter are in sixth in the Conference table, a point above Morecambe and two below Shrewsbury.
