GO West young man (or woman) if you want to improve your work-life balance, research has revealed.

Bosses who live in the West Country and Wales are most likely to encourage their staff to have a life outside their work.

A report by Lloyds TSB and Working Families found that managers in Scotland were least likely to understand the pressures of balancing work and home lives.

The two organisations launched a search for the best boss in the UK and will announce the winner later in the year.

The research showed that people often broke their New Year resolutions because they worked such long hours they found it difficult to stick to new fitness or lifestyle regimes.

Two-thirds of workers believed having a good relationship with their boss was just as important as good pay and benefits, said Lloyds TSB.

Head of equality Fiona Cannon said it was up to individuals to make sure they balanced work and home lives.''

Sarah Jackson of Working Families said judges in the best boss contest would be looking for people in authority who encourage a healthy work-life balance.
