ST IVES TOWN 0 HELSTON 4

HELSTON ended their lean run of Jolly's Combination League results with a welcome 4-0 win against St Ives Town at the Saltings.

Goals have been difficult to come by for the Blues and although they finished convincing winners, their goal tally should have been much higher.

On an undulating surface which proved a problem for most of the match for Helston, they created several good opportunities in the early stages.

Gary Davies twice had good openings, but he was denied on both occasions with point blank saves by goalkeeper Steve Burrows who had an outstanding game throughout.

Nigel Thwaites, bolstering the Blues' midfield, worked his way into goalscoring areas, but again found Burrows equal to the task.

A slip by Chris Breasley provided Town with a rare opportunity, but their finishing was no better than Helston as the shot finished well wide of the target.

Another breakaway by Town should have seen them take the lead in the 17th minute when a cross into the box only needed to be guided into the net by Stuart Fox, but as he was about to shoot the ball hit a bump and the chance was missed.

It was then that Helston eventually got the goal they had been threatening since the match began with Davies running on to a pass from Rob Bray and executing a great lob over Burrows from 30 yards.

Five minutes before half-time Helston doubled their lead when Karl Turner fed Thwaites who in turn delivered the ball into the box for Ryan Treloar to blast the ball into the net after his first effort rebounded off a defender.

Helston killed the game off at the start of the second half when from the kick-off Bray, who had an impressive game, fed Davies who sent a defender the wrong way before drilling his shot into the corner of the net.

Ten minutes later Helston gave the game a more realistic scoreline when they notched their fourth goal, this time Davies turning provider for Treloar to smash the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Burrows then came into his own with a string of great saves as Helston dominated and created a hatful of chances.

Thwaites, Davies, Turner, and Treloar all might have expected to score, but the bumpy pitch and goalkeeper proved too great a combination as they were thwarted time and again.

"The match was not particularly awe-inspiring," said manager Alex McDonald. "It was good to win and score goals and I was delighted to see Gary Davies get off the mark, Hopefully we can now build on this performance."
