WENDRON 6 MULLION 1
THREE goals in each half paved the way for a convincing 6-1 Jolly's Combination League victory for Wendron against Mullion at Underlane on Boxing Day.
The visitors arrived with a below strength side and given the circumstances departed with the sort of scoreline they might have anticipated. They had no recognised goalkeeper, so Nick Allen stood in, and they also had to call on veterans Jon Lugg and Dave Matthews to help out.
Wendron were also without a goalkeeper and were thankful that Anthony Williams was prepared to drop back into the goal. Duncan Gillett and David Toy were also both unavailable.
Despite their understrength side, the visitors made a bright start and looked capable of providing the home side with a game, but once Wendron scored there was only going to be one outcome.
Dominic Pullen had a couple of chances to put Wendron in front, but after ten minutes they eventually took the lead when Pullen forced his way through and thumped in a shot which rebounded off a defender back to Pullen who drilled an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net to give Nick Allen no chance.
Eight minutes later Wendron added a second goal following a good move. Good work by Toy and Simon Williamson enabled them to release Mike O'Neill and he made no mistake as he went round the 'keeper to score.
Just before half-time Wendron made the result academic when Williamson found Mike Davis who made ground on the flank before crossing into the box for O'Neill to score his second goal.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Mullion again making a bright start, enjoying plenty of possession, but not really offering too much of a threat in front of goal.
The visitors conceded a fourth goal when O'Neill spotted the 'keeper of his line and delivered the perfect chip shot over his head and into the net for a superb goal.
Fifteen-year-old Mike Davis cut in to notch the fifth goal after a penetrating move by Nick Seviour, Andy Miles, and O'Neill, but the visitors hit back straight away with a goal when Graham Cook raced through a square home defence to give Williams no chance.
The goal only reawakened Wendron's desire and they grabbed a sixth goal when Toy hit a superb 50-yard crossfield pass to Pullen who, from the corner of the penalty area, scored with a stunning header over the 'keeper.
Wendron will hope that this victory will be the springboard for them to push for a place in the top six, a tall order that begins with a visit to Perranwell on Saturday. Perran lost ground in the title race after they were beaten 3-2 at Truro on Saturday
