AS a Cornishman living in Scotland, I make the 870-mile journey down to visit family once a year. Having left Kernow in 1963, it had always been an intention to experience the journey across the Fal on the King Harry Ferry, so on December 5 my wife and I turned off at Playing Place to catch it.
The price - £3.50 - seemed a bit steep for the short crossing, but what the heck. Off it trundled, time for a quick visit to the loos - now that was a mistake. Maybe I should have been alerted by the comment of another traveller - "those are diabolical!" - indicating the toilets. Well, having travelled fairly extensively in the Middle and Far East - in very rough areas - I was unperturbed, but no, I must admit, the King Harry Ferry must boast the only Third World toilets in Cornwall - they were disgusting! The people who run this ferry should realise that it's not the locals who use these toilets but those of us who are visitors and need to use such services. It would not take that much of an investment to bring these to a reasonable standard. It certainly spoiled what I had looked forward to for 40 years!
