TRAILING by two goals early in the second half, Truro City hit back in great style to clinch a dramatic 3-2 Boxing Day victory away to Newquay in the Carlsberg SWL.

It was a result City have been hoping to achieve for some time and although they took the difficult route, the success will have given the side a great boost in confidence.

It was their first win in ten league outings and they will now be hoping that they can go to fellow strugglers Penryn Athletic on Saturday and repeat the result which would lift them off the foot of the table.

Playing against a strong wind in the first half, City attempted to play a containing game and it was a tactic that looked like paying off with the back three of Mike Cain, Dean Harris, and Greg Butcher looking more than comfortable.

City might have had thoughts of going into the break on level terms, but all their good work was undone after 30 minutes when Chris Wolstencroft took down Damien Dyer in the box for Jake Hartigan to send goalkeeper Andy Butcher the wrong way from the penalty spot.

City made a lively start to the second half, but found themselves facing a real battle after they scored a goal they would have been proud of had it been at the other end of the pitch. Hartigan drilled a cross into the box which Cain attempted to put behind, but he only succeeded in smashing the ball into the roof of the net with a spectacular volley that gave the 'keeper no chance.

City immediately introduced substitute Richard Young, a welcome sight for the managerial duo of Robbie Stephens and Les Gilbert, who received an instant reward.

Young picked up the ball wide on the right and cut in past several defenders before beating the 'keeper with his shot at the far post.

The goal was the incentive City needed as they took control and put the Peppermints under pressure. Their domination paid off 15 minutes from time when Paul Baldwin delivered a cross into the box to which Wolstencroft managed to get in a glancing header and beat the home 'keeper.

The initiative was with City, but their winner came after they themselves got away with a let-off. Martin Lentern thumped a shot against the bar and Luke Whelden saw his follow-up shot brilliantly saved by Butcher. It was from that point that City broke away with Luke Wort taking on the defence before drilling his shot into the corner of the net.

It was a great finish and just the result City needed to help them begin the climb to safety in the second half of the season.

Manager Robbie Stephens was a delighted manager: " We've been waiting a while for this result," said Stephens. "We are bottom of the league because we can't score goals, but I'm confident we won't be there at the end of the season.

"Our defensive record is good and we have every faith in those players, but we do need to find someone who can score goals.

"We've got Richard Young for a few games, so I'm confident we can pick up a few points, but we need to show determination in each game we play."
