AN old-style red telephone kiosk on Greenbank, Falmouth, has been granted a reprieve.
British Telecom had included it in a list of phone boxes earmarked for disposal, but had now changed its mind.
Residents as well as town councillors had always been against any such move and had wanted the box - situated next to a pillar box in what is known as Dunstanville Terrace - to remain.
The box is of special architectural or historic interest to Falmouth and is Grade II listed.
Eileen Stratton, of Greenbank, was among those opposed to removal of the kiosk and had written to the Department for Culture calling for it to be listed.
With the support of local Carrick councillor John Hambly, the fight was then on to ensure the box was removed from the BT disposal list.
What is not clear, in an age of mobile phones, is whether the box will continue to be kept in working order or will simply be an empty structure.
