Parents' views are being sought on plans to change the name of Helston School and Community College to Helston Community College.
The school's governing body has proposed the change, which is being supported by the local education authority.
In a Christmas message published in the school's newsletter, headteacher Pat McGovern said the new name would reflect the school's role more accurately.
He said: "In recent years it has become custom and practice to refer to Helston School as the 11 to 16 site and Helston College as the post-16 site. This appears often to suggest that we are two different organisations: one a school and one a college.
"In reality, we are one institution, serving the needs of secondary-age pupils aged 11 to 19. We also provide a wide range of educational courses for adults from the local community."
Mr McGovern, who only joined the school in September, said he had greatly enjoyed his first term as headteacher of a "marvellous" school.
He said: "I still regard it as a great privilege to serve as head of a school with such a long and successful history. I have been made very welcome, both in the school and the local community.
"Although only a term has gone by, I do feel a strong attachment, and look forward to developing the school to meet the needs of the local area in the coming year."
