A NEW computer programme is being used to help assess the condition of concrete bridges in Somerset.
COBRAS, or Concrete Bridge Assessment, is a new computer software package being used by Atkins in Taunton in partnership with the county council, to give a more efficient and cost effective assessment about whether bridges need strengthening.
The software allows civil engineers to test reinforced concrete bridges and see how much weight they can hold.
This new system is more accurate and faster than methods used before. The aim is to reduce the number of bridges that need repairing or replacing, so that disruption to motorists is reduced.
Atkins director John Burr said: "Any technological innovation that reduces frustrating traffic disruption for motorists is of great interest. While we want to make sure the county's roads are safe and well maintained, we appreciate the work we do can cause delays.
"COBRAS will make great strides in combating this while carrying out a more accurate and reliable job."
