Helston got their County Division One league season off to a most acceptable start on Saturday when they took maximum points from their opening day clash at Camborne.
It was a much changed Camborne team that won the toss and decided to bat. Over the last couple of seasons virtually a whole Ist XI have either retired or left the club including the likes of Messrs Shreck, Purchase, Davey, Roberts, Gill, Sweeney, Curnow, Dunstan and Berryman.
With new skipper Mark King not available, his deputy, Daniel Mitchell, opened with youngster Peter Butler, whose innings was interrupted due to injury. It wasn't until the 12th over, with the score on 42, that the breakthrough came, but wickets tumbled quickly from thereon as Lee Caddy and Nigel Dunstan, returning to his former club, broke the back of the home innings.
Five wickets fell for the addition of only 10 runs with only Mitchell (17) and Butler (28) making an impression.
Caddy and Dunstan bowled their quota of 12 overs apiece and shared the six wickets to fall at the halfway mark of the innings. Dunstan bowled impressively to take 3 for 20 and Caddy returned 3-43.
The second string of Dominic Bostock and Bradley Bury came on and both bowled miserly spells, only conceding 26 runs in the 16 overs bowled between them.
Thanks to a useful 20 from second team skipper Nigel Endean, three figures came up, but it was a wicket for Jonny Ludlum which ended the innings at 107 in the 42nd over.
Helston lost Dave Legge at 32 when he was lbw to Scott Powell. David Pascoe went in similar fashion for 9, but Steve Pollard joined Chris Martin and the pair looked to be taking their side to victory. Nigel Endean picked up the wickets of Pollard and Ludlum with just six runs required. However, Martin reached his 50, which included seven fours, to see Helston home by six wickets in the 25th over.
There is plenty of action scheduled at Beacon Park this weekend with Beacon and St Austell the visitors on Saturday and bank Holiday Monday respectively.
