The ECB Cornwall Premier League opened at Trescobeas on Saturday with newly promoted Newquay the visitors. The game was full value for early season spectators, see sawing throughout before Newquay managed to snatch victory by just one wicket with 13 balls to spare in a nail biting finish.
When last man Andy Hancock joined Mark Yates 11 runs were still needed and the odds looked on the home team, who had fought back well. Hancock and Yates held their nerve, to the jubilation of the visiting contingent.
An hour or so earlier it looked straight forward for the visitors as Tim Walton and Tim Marrion added 57 for the second wicket before Marrion was caught behind off Kris Subramanian for 32. New recruit Barry Purchase took the score to 84 with Walton before Subramanian struck again to dismiss the opener.
David Toseland got into the act enticing Purchase to drive to Larry Martin at mid off. Rob Harrison and Steve Mitchell soon followed as four wickets fell for 14 runs to put the home team right back in it. Ryan Driver and Yates steadied the ship, but just as they looked to have the job in hand Toseland got Driver to pull to Tony Matthews at deep square leg. Matthews then got into the act with the ball getting rid of Pete Bolland and Nick Ivanmy but in a final twist the experience of Yates and Hancock ensured a great start for the division's new boys.
On his debut David Roberts got Falmouth off to a good start hitting two sixes and three fours in his 38 made off 54 balls. Hancock had him caught at square leg in the 18th over with 59 on the board.
The introduction of change bowlers Hancock and Steve Mitchell slowed the rate up. Dramatically four wickets fell for only nine runs as Martin was stumped by keeper Yates. Steve Williams drove Hancock to cover point having made 22 off 71 balls. Sean Hooper mistimed a drive to be caught and bowled two balls later and when new boy Adrian Noott also fell to the Yates- Mitchell combination the innings had slipped to 79 for 5.
Sean Turner and Mark Burley added a 41 for the sixth wicket and with Matthews making a useful 13 not out Falmouth batted out their full quota of 55 overs to reach a useful total of 144, which proved to be just not quite enough.
