Humanitarian aid from Helston should soon be helping victims of the war in Iraq after being flown to Baghdad aboard the first commercial airliner to transport relief supplies into the country.
The Helston-Lizard Rotary Club has despatched 300 of its Shelter Boxes, providing enough tents, cooking utensils, torches, sleeping bags and other equipment to help some 3,000 people.
Club members loaded the boxes at their Water-ma-Trout headquarters on Tuesday, in time to catch a Virgin Atlantic flight due to arrive in Baghdad this morning.
Once on the ground, distribution of the boxes will be supervised by Lieutenant Colonel John Graham of the coalition forces.
Launched in April 2000 as the Rotary Club's millennium project, the Shelter Box concept has proved a huge success.
More than half a million pounds has been donated to the cause, and hundreds of boxes have been sent out to help victims of disasters around the world.
All the boxes are traceable so that people who support the project know exactly where their money has gone.
