Minnesota Fats Pool Bar, in Redruth, was the venue for the second eight-ball competition played on nine-foot American tables. Players were separated into two leagues utilising the four tables available. Competition in each league was fierce with just the top two going through into the semis.

League 1 saw stalwarts, like last month's winner Neil Angove, fall by the wayside to talented youngster Nathan "the ferret" Allen who claimed the top spot for his own. Matt Richards used his snooker background to negotiate himself into the semifinals taking the second spot with solid performances.

League 2 was a tight affair with three outstanding players in a points battle to claim the two semi-final places. Dave Angove, Steve Scarlett and son Gavin Scarlett battled it out with some educated tactical play resulting in Steve taking top spot. Dave and Gavin, equal on points, played off in an exciting one-framer to claim the last semi-final place. Gavin cleared four and the black to join his father.

The first semi-final paired Allen against Gavin Scarlett who took the game 2-0 after Allen accidentally sunk the black in the second frame. Joining Gavin in the final was Matt Richards who narrowly defeated Steve Scarlett in the other Semi.

The final was a tight run match, which went to the fifth and deciding frame. Matt Richards reached the black first but was left with a horribly tight angle into the middle pocket for victory; the sort of shot that can lose a frame, let alone the deciding frame of the final. Matt stepped up and knocked it home dead weight taking the £50 first prize and going one better than his brother who finished runner-up last time. As pre-arranged, Matt gave his case of beer to Gavin to console the unlucky runner-up.

Minnesota Fats will be running their next eight-ball tournament on Tuesday, August 16, at 8pm. All players who enter the competition early can play for half price in the weeks leading up to it.
