Grampound Road went down to a nine-wicket defeat at the Playing Field on Saturday against Newquay. After being put in, the home team made 230 for 8 thanks to a solid batting performance. Things did not get off to a good start as Martin Pearce was run out in the second over for 4.

Martin Roberts and Chris Hunkin then put on 37 before Rob Harrison dismissed Hunkin, who hit seven fours in his 29. Martin Roberts went on to make 71 off 104 balls before becoming one of five Neil Ivamy victims. There were other useful knocks from Kris Harris (20), Chris Roberts (36) and Dave Wilton with 18.

At the end of the innings, Lewis Sanders (20no) and Malcolm Hooper (16no) added a valuable unbroken 36 for the ninth wicket off the last six overs. Ivamy took 5 for 51 from 16 overs and Harrison 2 for 59.

Newquay opened with a 62-run stand between Harrison and Tim Walton. Harrison was bowled by Sanders for 31 in the 21st over. Drizzle did not help the home team with the ball needing to be dried continuously as conditions worsened. Walton, who was dropped on 43, took full advantage to hit four sixes and 13 fours. He ended on 100 not out made off 152 balls. His partner Rory Coutts hit a six and 13 fours in his 84 off 93 balls as the pair put on an unbeaten 171 over 32 overs to see their side to victory.

The winning runs came in the 53rd over. Sanders took 1 for 36 and Hooper sent down eight overs for only 18 runs.
