AN OLD mill near Chard is set to provide enough power for two houses and supply energy to the National Grid.

Claire and David Loneragan, of Courtmill in Wadeford, have invested their money into a project that will have a beneficial impact on the environment and potentially save them money.

Using an old mill in their back garden, the couple hope to produce between 3.7 and 4.7KW of energy with a scheme to turn it into a source of hydro-electric power.

Led by South Somerset District Council and part-funded by the Energy Saving Trust's Innovation Programme, a scheme to bring mill owners together in what is known as South Somerset Hydropower Group, has led to ten historic water mills being renovated to generate enough hydro-electricity to power 150 homes in the area and provide surplus energy for the power companies.
