Cornishmen Dr David Jenkin and Lieutenant Nigel Martin RN recently completed a 990-mile, 12-day cycle ride from Land's End to John o' Groats in aid of the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU), RCH Treliske, raising £2,075 in the process.

The ride was a "thank you" gesture to the staff at ITU who, during June 2003, saved the life of Nigel's mother-in-law, Joan, following a month on life-support.

"Joan's family wanted to find a way of expressing their heartfelt thanks for all the professionalism, dedication and hard work carried out by ITU staff; a cycle ride to raise funds specifically for ITU seemed the logical choice. Having successfully completed the ride this year, we'd like to thank all those who gave generously and supported us during the campaign," Nigel said.

The pair set off last year, but had to abandon the ride after just one day due to a collision while descending into Helmsdale, Scotland. Having purchased new cycles and recovered from injury, they set off from Land's End on June 4 with renewed vigour and determination.
