The three-year-old girl who died after being buried alive in a collapsed sandpit on a Hayle beach on Sunday afternoon has been described as a happy youngster who was full of life and fearless, and was thoroughly enjoying her holiday with her family.

Abigail Livingstone-Nurse, from Goring-by-Sea in Sussex, became trapped with her elder brother after a 5ft deep hole they had dug at Upton Towans beach, near the Beachside Holiday Park at Phillack, collapsed on top of them. On Sunday Coastguards from Portreath, police, fire crews from Camborne and Falmouth, the air ambulance and an air sea rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose were all scrambled after the frantic parents of the children involved were unable to free them.

Lifeguards from the area were also at the scene, one frantically digging to reach the youngster, keeping an airway open and holding her hand, but it was all in vain. The weight of the sand was too much.
