The owner of a Falmouth jet-ski company has reassured the public over its safety measures following a number of high-profile accidents nationally, which involved the crafts.

Nathan Thomas, who manages the Jet Scene outlet at Swanpool and also a shop at Mount Hawke, said that safety always came first when hiring out jet-skis.

Mr Thomas said: "Safety has to be important. If the measures aren't important you shouldn't be doing it. A person's life is more valuable than any toy or ski. You can replace boats but not someone's life. We just want people to have fun out there safely."

Jet Scene, which began operating from Swanpool at the beginning of July, currently has two jet-skis available to hire out by members of the public. Mr Thomas said that these were kept in two separate areas, marked out by yellow buoys, and two members of staff monitored the areas constantly from a safety boat.

The staff also had a remote control cut-off switch on the safety boat, which allowed them to cut the power from both skis if one of them breaks the rules or is in any danger, or if a boat or another jet-ski enters the buoyed area. This is rare, however, as they have been given a "no-go zone" which only they can use.
