PENSIONERS asked by the police to deal with victims of crime have dubbed the idea 'laughable'.

At a Pensioners' Forum meeting, members were told by Insp Neil Pitman that any volunteers would be welcomed to help man the phones at Chard and Ilminster stations.

This would include putting in follow-up calls to victims of crime.

Secretary of the Pensioners' Forum, Chris Plaster, told the News: "It came as a bit of a surprise to us. It was a bit staggering to think that police needed support."
