The tradition of holding a carnival procession as part of Helston Harvest Fair dates back many decades - as can be seen in this scene above from the 1937 event.

The practice died out for some time, but was revived in 2001 by Helston resident Sue Atkinson, of Penberthy Road, who is currently preparing for her fifth carnival.

This year's event takes place on Saturday, September 3, and, like last year, will be preceded by a fun day offering entertainment for all the family.

The fun gets under way at midday, with activities at Helston Cricket Club set to include a bouncy castle, face painting, a 37ft slide, surf simulator, giant trampolines, a barbecue and a selection of stalls.

The judging of the carnival entries begins at 4.30pm and will be undertaken this year by Tiffany Truscott, of Radio Cornwall, and Rebecca Wills, of BBC Spotlight, both from Helston. The parade, led by Helston Town Band, is due to set off at 6pm.

Mrs Atkinson has reminded anyone seeking to enter a float that their vehicle must have a valid MOT and insurance. Would-be entrants can contact her on 01326 574640 for further details.
