AROUND 1,500 super-fit athletes took part in the UK Ironman Triathlon on Sunday which took in the roads and lanes of Dorset and South Somerset.
The athletes began the gruelling event with a 2.4-mile swim in the lake at Sherborne Castle, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and then a 26.2-mile run.
The event was won by New Zealander Bryan Rhodes who completed the mammoth course in a time of eight hours, 42 minutes and 14 seconds. Frenchman Francois Chabaud finished second.
