West Cornwall Motor Club Ltd held its annual Greybeards Trial at Splattenridden Farm, Lelant, when 45 competitors were graced with a gloriously sunny day on which to ride the three laps of eight sections.
The main Greybeard Trophy went to St Austell visitor Andrew Thomas riding a borrowed 1981 vintage Bultaco, losing 13 marks, but only after a trial long battle with Truro's Adrian Bray riding a 1984 Fantic 300, who finished on 14 marks. Newquay resident Chris Anstee was a close third riding a 1959 Triumph Tiger Cub, only four marks further back.
The trial was also open to novices and beginners on modern machines. St Austell must be breeding good trials riders as the mono novice win went to Andrew Kearns from said town by one mark from Kevin Hawke. Mike Harvey, riding in only his second trial was a further mark adrift in third. In fact the top six in the class were separated by one mark each. Even the youth riders were in on the act with Robert Truscott winning his class on eight marks.
