Black smoke billowed into an otherwise cloudless sky near St Agnes at the weekend as hundreds of steam and traction engines gathered for the 50th anniversary of the West of England Steam Engine Society.

Thousands of people packed into the showground over three days. This was an attraction for everyone, young and old, and in particular for the many steam enthusiasts who could be spotted setting up their cameras and video recorders, capturing the sound and noise from the past.

A fair as big in size almost to the Royal Cornwall Show was blessed with fine weather and the fields at Tywanhayle Farm, Blackwater on the St Agnes road, echoed to the sound of steam whistles and fairground entertainment.

Sam Brooks, one of the organisers, was jubilant. "It was fantastic. We have got over 200 steam engines of all sizes and shapes and this has been our biggest show yet," he said. "We have broken all records."
