Cornish gigs from across the South West will be fighting for a spectacular trophy worth more than £1,000 in an RNLI fundraising race at the Newlyn Fish Festival on Monday August 29.
The Trafalgar Trophy is a model of a rowing lifeboat made at The Copper Works, Newlyn, by artist Michael Johnson. The award is being provided by Penwith district council.
Since retiring from dance some 14 years ago, Mr Johnson's commitment to re-establishing the skills of the coppersmith has led him to opening a workshop in the heart of Newlyn, ironically in the same building where it all started more than 100 years ago.
