A rare crab that usually lives at great depths was landed by Cadgwith fisherman Danny Phillips last week.
The 3lb box crab, which would normally be found off the continental shelf in around 3,000 metres of water, was hauled up from a depth of around 90 metres some five miles off The Lizard last Wednesday.
Marine expert Becs Smith, from the Blue Reef Aquarium, at Newquay, said box crabs rarely ventured into shallower waters.
"They are the largest crab we get around the UK, but we don't often see them because they live in such deep water, beyond the reach of fishermen's gear," she said.
