MYSTERY surrounds the death of a 26-year-old man who was involved in a car crash in Wellington last November.

Lorry driver Stuart Ronald George Deville, of Greenway, Bishops Lydeard, was driving his silver Subaru Impreza out of Wellington along the B3187 on November 29, when he collided with an on-coming Peugeot 205 at Cox's Corner.

Mr Deville suffered head injuries and died at the scene, while Susan Hathaway, who was driving the Peugeot, with her daughter in the passenger seat, had to be cut free from the car and taken to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.

An inquest into his death held on Tuesday heard that toxicology results showed no drink or drugs were found in Mr Deville's body, and police examinations could find no real mechanical fault with the car that could have caused the accident, except that the one tyre, which had not burst in the accident, was very over-inflated.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, West Somerset coroner Michael Rose said: "This tragic accident is not the first I have had to deal with at Cox's Corner.

"I am concerned that the tyres were so over-inflated and that may well have been the cause for this accident, but we will never know for sure."
