Cornwall produced a stunning victory to end their Minor Counties Championship campaign in grand style at St Austell last week and secure fourth spot (86 pts) behind champions Cheshire (100pts) , Devon (91pts) and Berkshire (91 pts).

In retrospect had victory been gained at Cheshire, where the match was drawn after Cornwall led by 193 runs on first innings, Cornwall would have topped the table.

The eight wicket win against Shropshire came with a remarkable 18 overs to spare, having been set a daunting 322 in a minimum of 74 overs. In doing so they achieved an all time county record successful fourth innings run chase beating the 313 against Oxfordshire on the same ground ten years ago. And this was all after being on the back foot over the first couple of days having to concede a 95 run deficit on first innings.

The highlight of the final afternoon was a memorable unbroken third wicket stand of 199 between David Roberts and Anthony Penberthy. The pair batted superbly to produce an exhibition of strokeplay. Roberts ended on a championship best 122 not out off 140 balls that included three sixes and 19 fours. Penberthy was equally as impressive striking four sixes and 16 fours off 102 balls. He looked to be in danger of missing out on a deserved century when he still needed 25 with only 31 required. Some impressive strokes and Roberts, unselfishly, deliberately playing back a maiden over, enabled "Berth" to strike the winning boundary and in doing so reach three figures.
