MULLION 3 GOONHAVERN 2: BEATEN in both their Jolly's Combination League games to date, Mullion bounced back in style on Saturday with a determined 3-2 win against last season's champions Goonhavern.

The result might have been more convincing, but a late fightback by Goonhavern gave the home side some anxious moments before finally sealing victory.

Mullion began at a cracking pace and put the visitors under pressure, but the nearest they came to scoring was from a Chris Rosevear 35-yard piledriver that skimmed the post.

Dave Phillips headed wide from a Mark Buchanan corner, but after 20 minutes Mike Newell put the home side in front with a fine first-time strike from 25 yards.

Martin Edwards notched the second from the penalty spot after he was pushed over in the box when running on to a pass by Mark Buchanan.

Goonhavern put Mullion under pressure at the start of the second half, but Daniel Reed commanded his box to deny the visitors.

Mullion notched a third goal, the best of the game, when Phillips knocked a ball over the top for Matt Sharp to score with a superb volley that rocketed into the net.
